Rikolto in East Africa (formerly known as VECO) is part of the Rikolto network, an international NGO with more than 40 years of experience in partnering with farmer organisations and food chain actors across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Rikolto aims to contribute to the development of a dynamic, sustainable and inclusive agricultural sector with family farmers providing quality produce for own consumption and for diverse markets (national, regional and international markets).
One of Rikolto’s global initiatives is the Food Smart Cities initiative with an overarching goal of increasing the consumption of healthy, sustainable and nutritious food among city dwellers. Rikolto’s regional programmes collaborate and work with cities to contribute to sustainable food systems. Rikolto in East Africa is in the process of developing its 2022 – 2026 regional Food Smart Cities programme for the target cities of Arusha, Mbeya, Mbale and Kampala and we're looking for consultants to do a contextual analysis to prepare for this work.
Objectives of this assessment
To better understand urban food environments in Rikolto’s target cities, looking specifically at gaps, market inefficiencies, and threats to healthy, sustainable and nutritious food supply for mainstream consumers, as well as opportunities and positive examples not yet at scale.
To identify levers for scalable and commercially viable actions that contribute to a sustainable food system in the selected city region.
To identify key actors to engage and partner-up with in our interventions.
To inform the design of interventions that will catalyse change processes resulting in a more inclusive food system (e.g. co-creation / testing of new models that fill in gaps or reduce inefficiencies in production, aggregation, processing and distribution).
