Construction of Two (2) Refrigerated Tricycles

1. Background
Urban food distribution, especially of perishable goods such as fresh produce, requires reliable cold chain solutions to maintain food safety and quality. In Tanga City, small-scale vendors and distributors often rely on informal means of transport, which exposes perishable food items to contamination and spoilage.

Rikolto, in collaboration with Tanga City, seeks to strengthen food safety and hygiene by supporting the construction of refrigerated tri-cycle units. Beneficiaries will provide base tri-cycle TOYO vehicles, while the Inclu-Cities project will support the design and installation of the refrigerated body structures. This intervention will improve safe transportation, extend shelf life of perishable products, and reduce food loss.

2. Objective of the Assignment
The overall objective is to design and construct two (2) refrigerated tri-cycle units to enhance safe and hygienic transportation of perishable food products in Tanga City.

Specific objectives are:

• To develop and finalize a refrigerated body structure tailored for tri-cycle TOYO units.
• To construct and install two (2) functional refrigerated body structures on beneficiary-provided tri-cycles.
• To ensure the design meets food safety, durability, and efficiency requirements.

3. Scope of Work
The consultant/firm will be responsible for:

Design and Validation

• Review requirements for safe transport of perishable food items.
• Develop a refrigerated body structure design compatible with tri-cycle TOYO models.
• Present the design for validation by Inclu-Cities and stakeholders.

Construction and Installation

• Construct two (2) refrigerated body structures based on the validated design.
• Install the refrigerated bodies on beneficiary-provided tri-cycle TOYOs.
• Ensure quality finishing, insulation, and energy efficiency.

Testing and Handover

• Conduct functional tests on cooling performance and durability.
• Deliver the two tri-cycles to designated beneficiaries in Tanga.
• Provide a simple user manual and orientation on operation and maintenance.

4. Deliverables

• One approved refrigerated body structure design (technical drawings, specifications, and bill of materials).
• Two (2) fully constructed and installed refrigerated tricycles.
• A documentation package including construction details, BOM, and user manual.

5. Duration and Timeline
The assignment will be completed within 4 weeks as follows:

• Week 1: Design development and stakeholder validation.
• Weeks 2–3: Fabrication and installation of refrigerated body structures.
• Week 4: Testing, delivery, and orientation.

6. Budget
The estimated budget will cover:

• Design and validation of refrigerated body structures.
• Materials and labor for fabrication and installation.
• Testing, delivery, and beneficiary orientation.
