About Rikolto
Rikolto is an international NGO with more than 50 years’ experience in partnering with farmer organisations and food chain stakeholders across Africa, South Asia, Europe and Latin America. Through its 5 regional offices, Rikolto is implementing 3 global programme which include Good Food for Cites, Sustainable Rice and Cocoa/Coffee Programme. Under our Good Food for Cities programme, we strive to build interconnections between actors and to foster collective action mechanisms and inclusive business relationships through participatory and inclusive food governance structures. Sustainable food production, Inclusive markers and creating an Enabling environment are always at the core of everything we do.
Currently, in Rwanda, Rikolto is leading the implementation three (3) projects:
- The Smart Food for Cities, locally known as “Imirire Myiza Iwacu” financed by the Belgian DGD focuses on professionalization of smallholder farmers in Rubavu District to increase vegetables production, postharvest handling, marketing, and market access with emphasis on regenerative agriculture practices.
- The Kungahara programme funded by the European Union (EU) aims to enhance sustainable production of horticulture products, farmer resilience and nutrition security in the food system of north-west Rwanda, in the districts of Musanze and Nyabihu. The two (2) projects are implemented in partnership with Kilimo Trust and The Rwanda Consumer's Rights Protection Organization (ADECOR).
- Rikolto is also partnering with Kahawatu Foundation to implement a project entitled “Promotion of Economic Empowerment for Women and Youth for Sustainable Coffee Production in Rwanda”. The initiative will contribute to the transformational change in coffee industry by co-designing and co-implementing interventions that tackle issues related to sustainable coffee production and marketing, crop diversification and increasing the living incomes of smallholder producers with focus on women and youth inclusion in the coffee value chain.
Purpose of the Position
Rikolto Rwanda is seeking for a Professional Intern to support the effective implementation of the above-mentioned projects, assist the finance and administration department, as well as contributing to the fundraising and resources mobilization efforts to grow Rikolto Rwanda.
Specific JDs
- Work with the Rikolto team and Implementing Partners to ensure implementation of assigned program tasks according to the approved projects implementation plans for 2025 with strict compliance with program standards.
- Document successful agri-innovation cases piloted by projects, facilitate sensemaking, learning and sharing sessions with potential scalers through different channels for the purpose of influencing them to invest and adopt the practices aiming to boost their productivity and ultimately reduce their production costs.
- Engage financial institutions and business development service providers to develop products targeting small-scale women and youth entrepreneurs along the chain.
- Document approaches and methodologies to successfully engage youth business to support local production and consumption of highly nutritious horticulture crops.
- Conduct a gender analysis to understand gender dynamics in the fruits, vegetables and potatoes chains, especially the constraints that women and youth face to effectively participate and equitably benefit from food supply chains in Rubavu, Musanze and Nyabihu.
- Assist in the improvement of model selling points to serve as central locations to sensitise consumers and create more demand for safe, healthy, and nutritious food.
- Support the organisation of field visits to showcase Rikolto’s work with stakeholders in Rwanda’s food system.
- Support project monitoring and evaluation by providing necessary data to feed the MEL processes, ensure documentation and collection of evidence from project implementation
- Identify topics for strategic communication, and ensure that communication materials are produced and disseminated, together with the communication team.
- Support the fundraising efforts by providing technical inputs in new project proposals development.
- Working closely with finance & administrative and operations department to assist in financial transactions, performing general administrative duties, and ensure compliance of Rikolto to statutory rules and regulations in the country.
- Regular, timely and accurate reporting
- Undertake any other assignment as may be required by Rikolto Rwanda.
Specific Technical Requirements and Qualifications
- At least a bachelor’s degree in the field of Agriculture Economics, Agriculture Sciences, Agribusiness, Food Science, Development studies and any other related fields.
- Having completed school in the five (5) previous academic years.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for English and Kinyarwanda, knowledge of French language is a significant added asset.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft 365 features and applications (storage & Cloud-connect features, SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Etc…)
- Willingness to work collaboratively within a team and contribute to collective goals.
- A genuine interest in agriculture and sustainable development practices.
