Rikolto in East Africa is proud to announce a new project in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Building on the knowledge and learning of vegetable and fruit projects in northern Tanzania, Rikolto will now expand its activities to five regions: Iringa, Njombe, Mbeya, Songwe, and Katavi.
The new project ‘Building Inclusive and Competitive Horticulture Businesses in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands’ is funded by the European Union and will impact the lives of 30,000 smallholder vegetable and fruit farmers, 500 off-takers and 5 export companies.
During this four-year project from 2020 to 2023, Rikolto will strengthen the farmers’ organisations, link farmers with traders and buyers, and focus on the inclusion of women and youth in the vegetable and fruit sector. We will also raise awareness about food safety and create a network of community development officers who will engage with the community leaders in the targeted local government authorities to promote nutrition sensitive agriculture and the importance of high-nutritious diets.
